The small beach of the Escambron Marine Park (behind the former hotel Normandie), is one of the few urban reefs. “They inhabit 3 to 4 species of turtles (such as the hawksbill and white fish),” says the owner of Scuba Dogs. You can see sea horses and lobsters, among other species.

In this area there is a natural reef. It has many rock formations and many soft and solid corals. In addition to manatees, you can see sea fans and brain coral, among others.

Inside the pond, there are many fish, such as the damsel and the sergeant fish. Where greater marine life is seen is in both corners of the rock formation.

Diving in the south gives access to sites along the descent caused by the continental shelf that runs parallel to the south coast of Puerto Rico. This side of the island has significantly less rain than the north and east, so rainwater runoff does not reduce visibility and the depth of the wall means that it does not roll over the bottom. In general, the visibility is good and excellent along this coast. Some sites have deep cracks in the wall; in some places, pieces of the wall have separated; parts of the wall have been inhabited with sea fans in deep water, creating a curtain of coral lace, while other areas have been colonized by hard coral songs.

When to Go Diving

Because Puerto Rico has a tropical climate, its temperature and humidity practically stays the same the entire year.  Unlike in more temperate countries, Puerto Rico only has two seasons, the wet season and the dry season.  Each of these seasons have different effects on the diving conditions, and depending on your preferences, you can take advantage of one or the other to get the best out of scuba diving Puerto Rico.

The Wet Season

The rainy season in Puerto Rico generally lasts between the months of June and November.  During this season, it’s not uncommon for it to rain daily, though not for too long at a time.  These months are also when hurricane season starts, so having a traveler’s insurance when you visit Puerto Rico during this season is a good idea in case something bad happens during your trip.  During these months, water temperatures vary anywhere between 75°-78°F.

One of the biggest advantages of scuba diving Puerto Rico during this season is that most of the dive spots tend to be uncrowded.  Accommodations will also be cheaper, since it’s considered to be the off season.  f course, conditions tend to change at a drop of a hat, so making sure that you check the water conditions before you dive is a must.

The Dry Season

Puerto Rico’s dry season lasts from December to May.  You can expect the weather to be sunny and humid during this season.  The water temperature tends to be the most comfortable at this time, playing at around 79°-83°F.  Visibility is always at its best during this season, as the planktons aren’t in bloom.  The waters tend to be calmer during this season as well.

The Red Sea is a favorite among scuba divers in the world due to its impressive marine life and warm clear water.  The sea’s diversity makes it even more appealing for divers with over 1,000 species of invertebrates and hundreds more species of soft and hard coral.  Egypt has a well-developed diving sector which attracts millions of diving enthusiasts year-long.  Saudi Arabia and Jordan also have excellent dive sites.  The top 10 scuba dives in the Red Sea are:

1. Dahab Dives, Egypt

Thousands of divers descend upon Dahab every year to enjoy its numerous dive sites.  The most famous of these sites is Canyon which is about 33 feet high.  The dive site features an easy entry and exit angle through a shallow lagoon.  Visitors get to explore beautiful coral gardens which are home to the Red Sea anthias, butterflyfishes, octopus, and unicornfishes.

The Blue Hole is another of the most visited dive sites in Dahab.  The site has no bottom although the floor of the hole itself is estimated at 361 feet.  Once inside, you will be surrounded by blue waters from where the hole derives its name.

Another of Dahab’s dive sites is Umm El Sid with about six dive locations.  There are numerous eels, and if you are lucky, you will see the colorful nudibranchs.

2. Sharm El-Sheikh Dives, Egypt

Sharm El-Sheikh is popularly recognized as home to one of the world’s best shipwrecks called SS Thistlegorm.  The Britishship dates back to 1941 when it sunk after a German air attack in the course of World War 2.  You will see numerous artifacts in the wreck including stacks of rifles, tanks, motorbikes, boots, and jeeps.  The marine life visible in Sharm El-Sheikh includes hammerheads, turtles, and blue spotted stingrays.

3. Brothers Islands

About 60 miles from the Egyptian shore are two islands, off of El-Quesir.  They are among the top 10 scuba dives in the Red Sea, and you can access them using liveaboards.  The islands are relatively isolated which makes them ideal for divers who prefer less-crowded areas.

The bigger island (Big Brother) has a plateau on its south edge, starting at a depth of 98 feet out to 164 feet before dropping off.  Nearly all of the diving that you will do here is wall diving which makes it easier to see big game including sharks and rays.  Big Brother is also home to two wrecks named the Aida and the Numidia.

Few ships reach Small Brother, and the corals are therefore pristine and varied.  It is also an ideal spot to swim with sharks.  The marine life present at the islands includes thresher sharks, hammerhead sharks, giant Murrays, oceanic whitetip sharks, and Napoleon fish.

4. Wreck Dives in the Sha’ab Abu Nuhas Reef, Egypt

The Red Sea harbors numerous ship wreckages, some from the ancient periods.  The Egyptians were historically renowned as shipbuilders while the Romans sailed across the Sea.  The Ghiannis D lies in the Strait of Gubal, just north of the Sha’ab Abu Nuhas Reef.  The wreck provides a habitat for marine life including shoals of batfish.

Also located in the Strait of Gubal is the Carnatic, a steamship launched in 1862 and which crossed paths with the Sha’ab Abu Nuhas Reef.  The wreck is covered in appealing soft corals.

On the eastern side of the reef lies the Chrisoula and you can take a boat from Hurghada to explore the remains of this Greek boat.  It sunk in 1981 with a cargo of stone and tiles.  It is home to Spanish dancers, boxfish, and butterflyfish.

The reef also claimed the Kimon M in 1978 and the wreckage is also covered with soft corals.

5. Safaga and Soma Bay, Egypt

Safaga and Soma Bay lie 9 miles apart, and their healthy corals make them among the top 10 scuba dives in the Red Sea.  They share many dive sites including Middle Reef and the Panorama Reef. You can take a liveaboard from Hurghada to access Panorama Reef which has a plateau extending for 98 feet full of Gorgonia.  The Middle Reef has one of the most beautiful coral gardens in the area.

Soma Bay is teeming with diving companies, hotels, and resorts on its shores.  Some of its wildlife include eagle rays, Napoleon fish, blue-spotted rays, moray eels, and potato cods.  Corals thrive here because of Soma Bay’s warm saline water.  The House Reef stretches for several miles presenting bright corals near the Bay.

6. MarsaAlam Dives, Egypt

MarsaAlam lies on the Red Sea’s western shore, and it can be accessed through the MarsaAlam International Airport.  Abu Dahab is among the dive sites at MarsaAlam, and it is known for its seagrass beds, green turtles, and guitar sharks.  The site is famous for the dugong or the “sea cow” which has become endangered due to rapid development.

You can snorkel with dolphins at the Dolphin House with lifejackets one.  For a free dive with dolphins, you can head to Sataya reef where you can swim side to side with wild dolphins.

7. Elphinstone Reef

The Elphinstone Reef lies 6.5 miles from the beach, and you can get there by taking a liveaboard from MarsaAlam.  It runs for 984 feet with sheer sides extending from North to South.  The reef’s middle is just 3 feet, but the walls drop steeply to the depths.  Visibility is typically around 66 feet.  The reef experiences strong current which will require a little bit of scuba diving expertise.

Large shoals of tuna can be seen in addition to turtles, grey reef sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks, hammerheads, oceanic white tips, barracuda, anthias, and zebra angelfish.

8. St Johns, Zabargad& Rocky Islands

Located in Southern Egypt are St Johns, Zabargad& Rocky Islands which are home to uncrowded dive sites.  St. Johns features a healthy reef system running for 25 miles.  The most popular reef dives are HabiliGafaar and Habili Ali which are inhabited by black corals, soft corals, and pelagic fish species.  St. Johns also has a plateau where divers can stop as well as tunnels and overhangs.

Zabargad Island lies 50 miles from Berenice, and it is surrounded by beautiful coral-covered slopes and pinnacles.

Rocky island lies 4 miles from Zabargad and has walls covered by coral trees and gorgonians.

9. Jordan Dives

Jordan is among the smallest nations bordering the Red Sea.  Its coastline extends for just 15 miles.  Most of the dives in Jordan can be done as shore dives, and you will see terrific coals and wildlife like the Napoleon wrasse and turtles.

Divers can dive on the remains of the Lebanese Coaster and enjoy the abundant sea life including uninterrupted corals.  Some of the dive sites in Jordan include the Japanese Garden, Cedar Pride, Seven Sisters, and Rainbow Reef.

10. Saudi Arabia Dives

Diving sites have been established around Jeddah and Yanbu in Saudi Arabia.  The Boiler Wreck is among the popular sites where corals have given habitation to small fish and crustaceans.  There is a vast array of colors due to the stretches of corals.

During the summer, the water temperature in the Red Sea ranges from 79 degrees Fahrenheit in the north side and about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit during the months of winter.  The temperature is measured at around 72 degrees Fahrenheit overall.  The Red Sea is known to be 1,398 miles long and 220 miles wide at its widest point.  It has a maximum depth of 7,254 feet.  Experienced divers can reach deep coral reefs that start at 110 feet sloping down to 450 feet.

The best time to go scuba diving is between the months of March and May or September and November.  Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go scuba diving at any other time of the year.  You can scuba dive in the red sea all-year round, but it is usually winter around the Red Sea from the month of December to February.  Both water and air temperatures will vary depending on the time of year.

Hot or cold weather

If you are not a fan of very hot weather, it would be best to avoid diving in June, July and August.  If you enjoy diving in cold water try diving in the months of December, January and February. The water is is extremely cold during these winter months.

Big or less crowds

If you’re not a fan of big tourist crowds, it’s best to avoid the high diving season that runs in March, April, May, September, October and November.  If you’d prefer a less crowded place, the summer months–June, July and August–would be a much better time to go scuba diving.

Are you a marine lover

If you are a marine animal lover, some seasons will offer better marine life encounters than others.  You should choose to go scuba diving during these months.  The Longimanus or the Oceanic Whitetip Sharks can best be seen from October to January.  However there are specific diving places where you can view them all year round.

Would you like to set your eyes on the Hammerhead Sharks?  Try scuba diving between June and September.  You are most likely to see the Thresher Shark in the Autumn and Winter seasons on offshore reefs.  Whale Sharks appear from the beginning of May to the end of July.

1. St. Mary’s Place – Roatán

On Roatán Island this scuba diving site is always described as spectacular.  The reef crevice begins at a depth of only about 20 feet, then it extends down and ultimately forms impressive canyons.  Some canyons go down to a depth of 90 feet and are steep and close together.  The walls of these canyons are covered with corals, sponges, and even black coral.

2. El Aguila Wreck – Roatán

This 210-foot cargo boat, whose Spanish name means “the eagle”, is one of Roatán’s favorite wreck dives.  Sunk to create an artificial reef in 1997, it now lies at 100 feet, broken into three parts, on a sandy bottom.

This is an underwater labyrinth of canyons and tunnels starting at 15 feet below the surface of the water and ending at 40 feet.  The network of tunnels and canyons transports divers from one end of the reef to the other.  Natural light filters through the crevasses and allows divers to see well.  The name of the dive site comes from the fact that several dolphin skeletons lie at the bottom of the caves and tunnels.

Located at the southeast tip of the island, Black Hills is a seamount whose peak is 35 feet underwater and drops to 165 feet.  You will see thousands of colorful tropical fish, but also barracudas, jacks and snappers.

The Halliburton site consists of a 100 foot wreck that was sunk in 1998 to create an artificial reef.  The wreck lies upright at a depth of 100 feet while its deck rises to 60 feet.  The marine life on the wreck is rich and diverse, ranging from shrimp to large schools of fish.

6. Black Coral Wall

The deepest drop-off in the southern portion of the Bay Islands is well named, with black coral that can be seen from 26 feet deep.  Indeed, this is a rather rare phenomenon, since black corals are usually found in very deep water, typically between 164 and 1600 feet.  In addition, the top of the reef is inhabited by juvenile fish, which are protected.  You will see several facets of the same ecosystem by diving on this site.

7. Hole in the wall

Located outside of Mangrove bight, this is a “must dive” while you visit Roatán. This is a great dive for diving enthusiasts of all levels because there is something for everyone here. You start by descending into a huge crevasse from 33 feet and arrive at the “hole in the wall” at about 115-130 feet.  This is also a perfect dive for deco or tech divers who can continue to descend to 180-200 feet.  After decending through the first crevasse you go up another crevasse next door and through several caves.  During the ascent look for cleaner shrimps, arrow-line crabs, nudibranchs and scorpion fish.  After diving through these two crevasses, you come to a cave were you can take beautiful pictures!

8. West end wall

A beautiful wall at the west tip of Roatán, just after West Bay.  This is a beautiful drift where you drift along the wall for about 30 minutes at about 80-100 feet, hoping to see the eagle rays and enjoying the barracudas, groupers, lobsters and moray eels. It ends in about 30 minutes in a superb coral garden at 20-30 feet deep, full of fish, small schools of jacks, safari fish … this is very exciting!

Why the name Texas?  Because everything is bigger!  Texas is at the end of Roatán, on the other side of the tip.  The conditions are different there, the current is frequent and with current comes bigger fish!  It’s a drift dive where you float along the wall.  You have huge gorgonians all along, big barracudas and groupers, often eagle rays… Awesome!  Be careful though, you can only go to Texas when conditions are good.

The Odyssey Wreck

This is the largest wreck of Roatán!  This cargo ship was donated to Anthony’s Key Resort after a fire.  After being emptied and cleaned, the boat was towed to her last home and sunk to become an artificial reef.  The wreck is in good condition and it is possible to explore the cargo area.

The Prince Albert Wreck

 This was the first sunken boat for diving, a tanker from Nicaragua, on the run with refugees.  The ship stayed for a long time in the port where it was stripped, then bought by the owners of Coco View.  After a long cleaning, she was towed to be sunk, but she ran aground on the reef.  After long efforts, she was finally able to be sunk at the planned site.  Now completely colonized by corals, this wreck is inhabited by eagle rays, moray eels, crabs and seahorses.
