Summary

A high price doesn’t always translate into a great product, but that’s not the case with the Scubapro Hydros Pro – a great BC with one of the most ingenious designs in the industry. As a critically-acclaimed product, winning the 2016 Red Dot award for its design, this compensator will impress virtually everyone.

While experimenting with less bulky diving-jackets in the past, previous Scubapro products haven’t really measured up to expectations. Although the quality of the build was clearly satisfying, storage and accessorizing seemed to be a real issue with some BC’s, and that can make a big dent in the product’s utility and value. Now, we’ll be taking a look at the Hydros, a concept that seems to break every previous concept.

About SCUBAPRO: Scubapro has been around for the past 50 years, a lot of time, which they’ve used to constantly experiment with new concepts and ideas that have given a new shape to the diving gear and accessories that were manufactured by other companies from the niche.

In the mid 60’s, the USA-based company has commercialized the first analog decompression meter, a feature that will later be perfected and extensively used in scuba diving. In the late ‘70’s, they’ve introduced the first stabilizing jacket, a very innovative concept for the time that has clearly changed the view the industry had on designing life-support equipment for divers.

Design and Features

Although the company’s background is clearly relevant, let’s not focus on that. Let’s talk about the Hydros Pro and the uniqueness of its design.

First of all, forget about denier CONDURA. Although CONDURA is a tough, very durable equipment, ScubaPro has chosen to build the harness for this BC out of Molded Monprene Gel, a very durable material that’s resistant to UV, chemicals, and abrasion, while being very versatile – used in many different products and services. This also makes the Hydros PRO BCD very easy to repair and it allows it to have a highly customizable modular design – use it with heavier equipment and more storage space or customize it for minimum weight and maximum mobility.

Monprene can be molded with different textures. This particular design has a good grip due to the body gel, preventing the Hydros from moving around too much. It will keep a firm and comfortable position on your body.

This comes available both in special sizes for men and women, a nice touch for a BCD. It’s also gonna be dry as soon as you take it out of the water, so you can start packing right away without worrying about where you’re going to store it.

At the top of your left shoulder, you’ll find the low-pressure inflator system that’s kept in place by a rubber, bungee-like belt. The Balanced Power Inflator (the new one) comes with a hinge system that allows you to control the amount of gas you send in the bladder, depending on how you position your fingers when you press. There’s also a deflator and an oral inflator at the end of the system – pretty standard stuff.

The shoulder straps are easily adjustable to fit your exact size. The chest strap’s position is also adjustable – you can move it up and down, or completely remove it. The straps are interchangeable so that you can opt for lighter variants or for more customizable straps on which you can mount different accessories and pouches.

Monprene makes this harness to be neutrally buoyant, so you won’t have to worry about the lead that much when trying to reach your neutral state. The back part is also made out of monprene, in a more comfortable version, with added pads for your neck area.
Below the shoulder straps, you’ll find two standard weight pockets. The “pockets” feature four grommets each, where you can bolt accessory kits or mount a knife.

Moving on the wing and bladder – the wing is designed with a bungee system that will compress it towards the middle of the back as it deflates, keeping inflation in the middle and lower areas of the back, while the upper side will be relatively slim. There are two pull-dump systems, one at the upper right of the bladder and one at the lower left, both easy to reach and use, with the standard hose pull-dump being placed on the upper-left shoulder.

The air tank will be firmly locked in position by the Super Cinch buckle. The backplate also has a tank-like shape, with three rubber points which that prevent the container from moving. There are also two pockets for non-dumpable weights at each side of the tank.

Being as customizable as it is, I think every type of diver can use it for a lot of different activities – that’s the beauty of it. The only downside to the product is the fact that Scubapro started manufacturing accessories for the BC one year after it’s been released. In addition to that, buying both the BC and accessories can get really expensive, although the quality of the product is indisputable.

Zeagle Halo BCD is one tough cookie, I’ll tell you that much. Although it isn’t, by any means, a cheap product, you’ll be getting what you pay for, trust me! Zeagle has designed this jacket-style compensator using 1000 denier CONDURA for the exterior of the jacket and even used the toughest 1680 denier fabric for some parts of the compensator, as you’ll see later in the review.

About Zeagle: One of many products manufactured by Zeagle, a company with a lot of experience in the water sports gear and equipment game. This company has been around as early as the 1970’s.

Based in America and running since 1979, Zeagle is a manufacturer that doesn’t cut corners. No, sir! Respected all over the world for their quality products and attention to detail, Zeagle has been filling the market with diving accessories, compensators, air tanks, gauges and more great stuff, for the better part of the past 30 years. One more interesting fact about the company is that its founder, Dennis Bulin, was very passionate about skydiving at the time, a passion that will reflect in a lot of their products.

Design

Now, let’s all shift our focus back to the Zeagle Halo BCD. What’s so great about it and why should you even consider buying it? Well, for starters, let’s talk about features that you won’t be seeing on many BC’s manufactured by other companies.

The Zeagle Halo BCD is designed with a personal fit system. On the inside of the BC you’ll find a comfortable back padding that’s “leaking” to the sides of the back, offering you extra protection so that your kidneys won’t get pressed in when the jacket becomes fully inflated. But that’s not the point. The point is that you can actually remove and custom fit the shoulders to accommodate a bigger person that might find it hard to comfortably move while using a standard size. The chest and waist straps are also adjustable.

The Zeagle Halo BCD also has a weight-release ripcord system. As previously stated, the person behind Zeagle, Dennis Bulin, was very passionate about skydiving. The Halo features an easy-to-reach ripcord, placed at the bottom left of the jacket, that will unload both of your pocket weights without having to unzip the pockets themselves (up to 30 lbs weight). This is a particularly nice feature to have, especially when you need to resurface quickly, maybe in case of emergency, but it has a downside to it – you need to rethread the whole system if you want to place the weights back in their pockets, which can get tricky if you’re not that handy.

Features

The front side of the jacket features two weight pockets that come with two pouches to store your weights. You’ll also find a lot of storage options for your accessories. You’ll find two fairly-large zipper pockets at each side of the jacket, perfect for granting you quick and easy access to your extra gear and also have an extra knife or accessory mounts. In addition to that, you’ll find seven stainless-steel black D-rings, two on the right shoulder strap, one on the left one, one on each storage pocket and two below the weight pockets – lots of options and utility.

Strapped to the left shoulder strap, you’ll find a power inflator that’s removable. At the end of your diving sessions, you can fit a garden hose to the inflator hose and clean it with ease.

Now, let’s move to buoyancy. The back side of the jacket is designed with two 5 pound weight pockets – that’s not-dumpable weight. This 10-pound rear weight system will give you a little extra stability which can make a lot of difference. To control buoyancy, you’ll find three valves, two shoulder valves, and one rear valve, at the bottom right side of the back. You can dump air from the hose through one of the valves, while the other two are connected to the bladder.

On top of that, you can find a tank band, which will keep the tank firmly in place, a stabilization strap, and a positioning strap, all three working to keep your container in place while not affecting your mobility and comfort. You can also find a carrier at the top to transport your fully-equipped jacket when you’re ready to hit the water.

With a hefty(ish) price, you’ll need to get some value. Don’t worry! If you buy the Zeagle Halo BCD you’ll receive a LIFETIME warranty (THAT’S RIGHT!) – available for the original owner, so don’t buy any second-hand products. You can dive for years to come and the company will repair or replace the jacket for free.

Design

If you’re a seasoned practitioner or if you’ve been interested in purchasing a BCD for a while, then you must be familiar to denier CONDURA fabrics – a very tough material used in designing most buoyancy compensating devices. Scubapro has eliminated this material from the Hydros Pro – a bold move.

That doesn’t mean that any compromise has been made in designing the Hydros – no, sir! This particular BCD is manufactured using monprene – a moldable, resilient fabric, that has allowed Scubapro to design a highly-customizable harness, enabling every diver to modify their own setup to maximize storing capacity, to make it ultra-lightweight or to blend both into more of a hybrid concept.

Features

One of the advantages of using monprene is that the surface can be texturized. When designing this model, Scubapro has given the harness a nice adherent surface, so the BCD will have a good grip, very comfortable to wear.

Size-wise, it comes in all sizes for both men and women, another advantage of the monprene harness. This is a good feature for couples and bigger groups who are planning on using the same device but are restricted because of incompatible sizes.

Let’s discuss the basic design of the harness, starting with the shoulder straps. As you’d expect, they offer users to get the best fit possible. The chest straps are interchangeable, coming in basic and customizable versions (the customizable version allows users to add more accessories to the straps).

The new version of the BPI (balanced power inflator) is locked in position on the upper side of the left shoulder strap, kept in place by a rubbery bungee-style belt, which holds it nicely in place. The BPI has a hinge instead of a button, allowing you to control the amount of gas that you feed into the bladder, depending on where you press.

Another thing that makes monprene a great material for using in designing BCD’s is the fact that it’s neutrally-buoyant by definition, minimizing the amount of lead you have to add to the device. In the lower part of the BCD, you’ll also find two weight pockets with four grommets for adding additional accessories.

The bladder has a wing-design – two wing-like extensions allow air to leak into the sides, making it more stable and aquadynamic. The wings have elastics embedded into the fabric so that while the bladder deflates, the sides will shrink, keeping the middle part fully inflated.

Dumping is pretty standard. Two systems are at the back of the bladder, one on the upper right side and one diametrically-opposite, so reaching them is no problem. The hose also has a pull dump, which is standard on most models.

On each side of the air tank, you’ll find two non-dumpable weight pockets. A Super Cinch buckle (that is present on more Scubapro products) will lock the tank in place. The backplate is shaped so that the air tank fits in like a puzzle piece, and three rubber buffers keep it from shifting positions.

The harness comes with a lot of grommets and D-rings to mount every accessory you might need for spearfishing, photography and more. The manufacturers are also working on 100% compatible accessories that will be available soon enough.

There isn’t much left to say that we can explain in a review. Bottom line, it’s a very good BCD, especially for people who practice different diving activities, as the harness can be equipped depending on each activity. While it’s packed with features and bring great value to the users, it’s still pretty expensive, as it’s a professional product. In our opinion, that’s the only real downside of the Hydros Pro.

The ScubaPro KnightHawk BC – what a weird name for a diving jacket. Throughout this review, we’ll be discussing the features of the KnightHawk, pros and cons and other information on the specs that might shed some light on the overall quality of the product.
At a first glance, I have to admit – I’m not really impressed. Although the KnightHawk isn’t a bad product, you can probably buy something better for around the same price. The aircell is position in the back and doesn’t “leak” in the waist area, as with other products, and this might cause some issues when trying to maintain stability in a floating state.

About Scubapro: ScubaPro has been around for over 50 years and was one of the original five American diving equipment and gear manufacturers, responsible for changing the water sports industry through several innovations and revolutionary products designed throughout the years.

In 1978, the company has created the first vest-type buoyancy compensator. Whether this was or not revolutionary for the diving segment isn’t up to me to decide, but this has certainly shaped the market in the coming years. Currently, Scubapro is part of Johnson Outdoors (since 1997) and is making a wide array of diving and general watersports equipment and gear.

Design

Let’s start diving (hehe) into the design and features that the KnightHawk has to offer. First of all, it can be a nice product to own. It’s tough, there’s no denying that. Like most of the other jacket-style, BC’s that you’ll find on the market, it’s crafted using 1000 and 420 denier CONDURA fabrics, a material that’s resistant to abrasion, scrapes, and damage in general, whether it’s caused by extended usage, environmental factors or your own gear and accessories.

It’s not too bulky. The fact that this is a back-inflate life-support device means that you won’t be getting any extra squeeze from the front. This means that, if you’re used to using some other type of jacket-style compensator, you might want to give the sizes a try – they will differ.

On the adjustable shoulder straps, you’ll find two velcro straps, one on each shoulder. One’s for keeping the ScubaPro Balanced Power Inflator hose in place, as you may assume. The other one just seems like a design flaw, mostly because you’ll have trouble in finding a proper use for it and it might even get in your way.

Features

Looking at the front side of the KnightHawk, you’ll see limited storage space. Something that I don’t like about ScubaPro’s BC line is the D-ring design. They’re “pre-bent”. I don’t understand what that means if you’d want them bent you’d do that yourself. Basically, they have a square shape and they have a smaller diameter. The cummerbund is padded so that it would compensate any discomfort you might feel from the inflated aircell.

The two zipper cargo pockets, placed on the lower part of the vest, are very, very small, so if you find yourself needing extra accessory space, this will be a big problem. If you’re a photographer and need to bring along extra gear, I wouldn’t recommend this BC. This is another feature that’s going to reduce the overall bulk of the vest. I have to admit, I understand why this stripped-down design seems appealing, but cutting corners isn’t something that you should do when you’re making life-support equipment, and extra accessories might offer you more safety. Size-wise, it comes available in five sizes with 33.7lbs/15.4kg to 44.9lbs/20.3kg of lift capacity. Consult the size chart on the manufacturer’s website to find a good fit.

Depending on size, the weight pockets can carry up to 10 (for smaller sizes) and 12 lbs each, with a maximum total of 24 lbs in front weight. When fully-equipped, you might find it difficult to keep your balance while having positive buoyancy. When reaching neutral buoyancy, you’ll have no problem with balance.

You’ll have easy access to both of the dump valves that are placed on the upper side of the BC with both of your hands. The same is true for the lower release valve. The tank will be kept in place by a single-band Super Cinch buckle – standard stuff, easy to use.
The company doesn’t provide clear details about what kind of warranty we’re looking at, just some references in the user manual. To get the full picture, contact ScubaPro directly before making your purchase and request additional information.

Depending on what you’ll be using this for, you might have problems with the lack of storage options or you might be happy with the less-bulky design of this particular BCD. All in all, it’s up to preference only, although the price is also pretty steep. Other than that, this is made using durable, high-quality materials and everything will be held in place, so don’t worry about that.

Offering DSLR-like quality and features, the price of the camera isn’t that low (it’s pretty high up there, to be honest), but that’s to be expected of a premium product. It’s capable of ultra-slow-motion, recording at a maximum of 1000 frames per second, 4K video capture and more. It also features an impressive OLED EVF (electronic viewfinder), 3.6x optical zoom and Anti-Distortion electronic shutter that offers soundless recording at high shutter speeds.

The 315-point detection autofocus system and OLED EVF work great in low-light environments, granting you clear pictures and videos, easy focus and stable footage while in motion or stationary. The Carl Zeiss zoom lens is also a nice feature present on this gadget.

Everyone wants to have the best gear, no matter what your sport is. In all cases, your performance in that sport is enhanced by having the best possible equipment. But where scuba diving stands out from most other sports in a big way is that having the best scuba gear might be the difference between life and death when things go unexpectedly.

From the kelp forests to the coral reefs, the shipwrecks to the hidden caves and trenches, there is an abundance of life wherever you look. Even in the vast expanses of the ocean, schools of exotic fish and giant whales can be found, as well as the tiniest of sea life, such as krill and plankton.

One thing most, if not all, divers agree on is that spending time under the ocean’s surface is the most serene, tranquil experience on earth. But there’s a good reason seamen and fishermen alike have been advising us not to turn our back on the ocean for too long. The sea can turn on you in the blink of an eye, with riptides and unexpected eddies, currents that are stronger than they seem, and even some of the most powerful predators in the world.

While it doesn’t pay to be paranoid, it certainly does pay to remain aware. The most basic factor we as divers need to remember is that we are guests in the submarine world. Humans aren’t biologically engineered to remain underwater for long periods of time, as much as we love it.

We lack flippers, which is why we use fins. Unlike some species of sharks, we don’t have a nictitating membrane that protects our eyes from abrasions and the salinity of the water, which is why we use scuba masks. Marine mammals such as whales, seals, and dolphins have a protective layer of fat to guard against the cold, but we lack that feature—hence wetsuits. And because we lack gills, we use diving tanks to breathe underwater.

But tanks can only provide so much air for us, and ascending needs to be carefully accounted for. The deeper we dive, the higher the pressure levels—which means more of the nitrogen in our tanks is being dissolved in the water that makes up about 70% of our bodies. If you ascend too fast, the pressure being released has the same effect on that nitrogen as shaking the bottle before opening it does for soda.

This is a very painful experience, and can even be fatal. Known as decompression sickness, or more commonly as the dreaded bends, it’s something no diver wants to experience. Those of us that have wouldn’t wish it on our worst enemies.

To avoid the bends, you need to ascend at the right pace and take intermittent breaks (“decompression stops”) on the way up. You don’t want to be running out of air or time when you start ascending, otherwise, you’ll have to spend some time in a decompression chamber and hope for the best.

Boasting a larger screen than most diving computers (2.2-inch widescreen), the Perdix (like the Predator and Petrel models before it) have set a standard for legibility, allowing users to view all the important data required without having to navigate through different screen modes. Shearwater originally catered exclusively for more technical divers, but have made accommodations for recreational divers as well with the Perdix.

With a full-color display affording users an overview of all the relevant information, the Perdix also boasts an adaptive safety stop feature. Every dive is considered deco, with adjustments made for the number, depth, and time of decompression stops based on your dive time, depth, and diving history. The model also falls under their Aladin range, which we introduced above with the SPORT Matrix Wrist Computer, and features many of the same functions. It’s a truly compact dive computer solution and boasts a highly intuitive data display system. With a metallic faceplate and segmented top and middle row display, as well as the matrix display on the bottom row (both of which are characteristic features of the ScubaPro Aladin Matrix range), it offers a sharp-looking, full-featured solution targeting at avid recreational divers. If you’re looking for a convenient dive computer with air integration, you need not look much further than this.

The full air integration allows you to do away with the need for an additional submersible pressure gauge, and the inclusion of an onboard digital compass makes it a firm favorite among divers who prefer using a single dive computer rather than relying on several accessories and tools.

Similar to the SPORT Matric Wrist Computer, the Aladin H Matrix features ScubaPro’s predictive multi-gas ZHL16 ADT MB algorithm, which also accommodates three gas settings ranging from 21% to 100% O2.
